OpenAI signed a letter of intent to purchase $51 million worth of AI chips from Rain, a startup backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who has also invested personally in Rain.
Rain, located near OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters, develops neuromorphic processing units (NPUs) mimicking human brain functions. The nonbinding agreement, signed in 2019, has not been previously disclosed. Rain has projected significant advancements in its chip technology, promising 100 times more computing power and 10,000 times greater energy efficiency than traditional GPUs. The deal reflects OpenAI's strategy to secure essential chip supplies amid high costs and hardware constraints. However, Rain's progress faces challenges, including leadership changes and the forced divestment of a Saudi Arabia-affiliated fund due to national security concerns. OpenAI's reliance on external chip suppliers like Nvidia, Google, and Amazon is also highlighted, with potential plans to diversify chip sources for AI development.
The ongoing financial complexities and internal dynamics at OpenAI are further complicated by potential overlaps between the personal investments of its executives and their professional dealings. This scenario raises critical questions: Are the decisions being made primarily to advance OpenAI's objectives, or do they also serve to personally benefit and increase the control of those in leadership positions? This ambiguity brings to light the challenges of balancing corporate interests with individual gains in the rapidly evolving AI industry.

Intel and the US government are training a super-powerful GPT.
A new one-trillion-parameter AI model, named 'ScienceGPT,' is being developed using data from the Aurora supercomputer. This project, spearheaded by the Argonne National Lab in Illinois and backed by Intel and the US government, is poised to be a significant advancement in generative AI systems.
Although smaller than OpenAI's 1.7-trillion-parameter GPT-4, ScienceGPT is still nearly twice the size of Google's 560-billion-parameter model. The training, which is currently utilizing only 256 of Aurora's 10,000 nodes, may take months. ScienceGPT aims to integrate scientific texts, codes, and papers to expedite research. The Aurora supercomputer, featuring 60,000 Intel GPUs and over 80,000 networking nodes, ranks as the second-most powerful globally and is expected to surpass the Frontier supercomputer once fully operational.
New York Times' AI List Excludes Women Trailblazers" Shame on you NYT
The recent New York Times article "Who’s Who Behind the Dawn of the Modern Artificial Intelligence Movement," has sparked considerable criticism for its exclusion of female pioneers in AI. This omission is not just unacceptable but reflects a surprising lack of awareness and diligence in reporting. In an era where women are not only participating in but also leading the field of AI, their absence in such a prominent list is a significant oversight. These women have been fundamental in laying the groundwork for the advancements we see today in AI.
It's disheartening and frankly tiresome to still address this issue in 2023. The failure to acknowledge the diverse and influential contributions of women in AI by a publication as esteemed as The New York Times is more than an oversight; it's a step back in the ongoing pursuit of equitable and accurate representation in technology. This exclusion not only undermines the women who have been instrumental in AI's development but also sends a discouraging message to future generations of diverse AI talents.
If this was a strategy by The New York Times to generate more readership and discussion, it is a misguided approach that compromises credibility rather than enhances it. Responsible journalism should amplify critical voices, and this article misses that mark. The media needs to portray the diverse landscape of AI professionals accurately and not contribute to the erasure of significant contributions by diverse talents.
In response, the AI and tech communities must collectively advocate for acknowledgment and celebration of women's critical contributions to AI. Their work is not just shaping AI; it's defining the future of technology. The call for action extends to acknowledging many influential women in AI, including Fei-Fei Li, Jaime Teevan, Daphne Koller, Anima Anandkumar, Dr. Joy Buolamwini, and many others who are at the forefront of research, business, technology, and policy in AI. Their contributions must not only be recognized but also celebrated as they pave the way for future innovations and a more inclusive technological landscape.
