NYT Files a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft.
The New York Times (NYT) has initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing them of unauthorized use of its articles to train AI models like ChatGPT. Filed in the Federal District Court of Manhattan, the lawsuit claims copyright infringement and seeks significant damages, potentially running into billions. The NYT contends that these AI chatbots, by using its content, directly compete for its reader base, impacting its revenue stream. This lawsuit underscores the evolving dynamics between AI technology and traditional media, particularly in how AI platforms, while currently a point of contention, could reshape news consumption as they forge partnerships with media entities. Although OpenAI expressed disappointment over the lawsuit, Microsoft has remained silent. This reticence might hint at strategic considerations, given their substantial resources, which could influence the outcome or settlement of such a lawsuit. This case is pivotal in understanding the intricate interplay between AI technology and intellectual property rights in the media sector, potentially setting a precedent for how copyrighted content is utilized in AI training.

Apple’s Design Head to work on Hardware for OpenAI
Jony Ive, Apple's renowned former design chief, and Sam Altman of OpenAI are teaming up for an artificial intelligence hardware project. Tang Tan, Apple's outgoing iPhone Design Chief, has been recruited to join Ive's company, LoveFrom, to work on this project. The collaboration aims to create AI devices with innovative capabilities. Although in its initial stages, the project is currently focused on recruiting talent and developing concepts.
This collaboration marks a significant post-Apple venture for Ive, who had a profound impact on Apple's product design. Tan's departure from Apple to LoveFrom underscores a continuing trend of design talent leaving the tech giant since Ive's exit in 2019. LoveFrom, gathering a notable list of clients like Airbnb and Ferrari, had a previous consulting agreement with Apple that concluded in 2022. The partnership between Ive and Altman represents a potentially transformative fusion of top-tier design and cutting-edge AI technology.
