5 Techs to Watch in 2024
1. Crispr
CRISPR technology, a cutting-edge gene-editing tool, is poised to revolutionize medical treatments within 10 to 15 years. A significant milestone was reached with a New Zealand woman receiving a CRISPR-based treatment from Verve Therapeutics to lower her cholesterol, marking a shift from treating rare genetic disorders to more common conditions. This treatment uses base editing, a more precise form of CRISPR that minimizes unintended genetic alterations. An advanced version, prime editing, could further broaden treatment possibilities by allowing the insertion of DNA segments into the genome. While these treatments are still experimental and their safety remains to be fully verified, they hold the potential to address a wide range of medical conditions.
2. Military Drones and AI
The landscape of drone warfare is rapidly evolving, thanks to affordable, mass-market drones like Turkey's Bayraktar TB2 and the integration of advanced AI technologies. These cost-effective drones are shifting the balance from high-end American models, like the Predator and Reaper, to more accessible options from countries like China, Iran, and Turkey. The TB2, notable for its modest speed, long endurance, and effective targeting capabilities, has been instrumental in various conflicts, including the Ukraine war, unfortunately, we live in times of war, and these devices will only get better and more demanded.
Simultaneously, AI is significantly streamlining regular drone production and development, offering multiple enhancements:
1. Autonomous Flight and Navigation: AI enables drones to autonomously navigate and make real-time decisions, increasing operational efficiency.
2. Improved Data Processing: On-board AI allows for real-time data analysis, crucial for applications like surveillance and agricultural monitoring.
3. Enhanced Image Recognition: AI-driven image processing enhances pattern recognition, benefiting environmental monitoring and security operations.
4. Predictive Maintenance: AI algorithms predict maintenance needs, reducing downtime and extending drone lifespans.
5. Customization and Scalability: AI facilitates the customization of drone functions and manages large fleets for extensive tasks.

3. AI Hardware and Robots
The year 2024 is shaping up to be a landmark year in the field of AI hardware and robotics, with an array of devices and technologies poised to redefine our interaction with AI and the world around us.
In 2023, we witnessed the unveiling of groundbreaking AI-enhanced devices that are set to transform our interaction with technology. The highly anticipated Apple Vision Pro is slated for release this year, promising an advanced blend of functionality and design. Additionally, Ray-Ban's collaboration with Meta resulted in innovative smart glasses that enable users to ask questions about what they see and capture images and videos through simple voice prompts. Furthermore, the world was introduced to the AI Pin, a compact, wearable device that signifies a significant leap in the realm of accessible and user-friendly AI technology.
Emerging Trends in AI Devices:
1. Smart Assistant Pins: More companies will jump on the AI Pin wagon, theses always connected discreet wearable AI devices offer voice control and gesture recognition, enhancing task efficiency.
2. Task-Oriented Robots: Impacting sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics with specific applications, like Boston Dynamics’ Handle and China’s MoFan robots are in high demand, and their performance will only improve with AI
3. Elderly Care Robots: Aiding seniors with physical assistance and emotional support, evolving for diverse caregiving roles.
4. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have the potential to improve the quality of life of individuals with severe motor disabilities. For example, it could help people with paralysis regain control of their limbs and enable service members to operate a drone hands-free on the battlefield. BCIs are still largely experimental, and there seems to be a low but not negligible risk of adverse effects related to BCI devices. Risks associated with invasive BCI devices may include infection, bleeding, seizures, and physical damage to the brain.
2024 is poised to be a pivotal year for AI hardware and robotics. The advancements in AI algorithms, miniaturization, connectivity, and integration with other technologies are driving this revolution. This progress promises not only enhanced experiences and capabilities but also challenges traditional notions of interaction with technology, heralding a new era of convenience, efficiency, and innovation.
4. AI in Education
In 2024, AI is set to transform education by offering more personalized and responsive learning experiences. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are already reshaping lesson planning and assessment, allowing for more dynamic and student-centered approaches. Professional development for educators in AI integration is gaining momentum, while policies on AI in education are evolving, focusing on privacy and cybersecurity. AI-powered adaptive learning systems promise real-time feedback and personalized instruction. Generative AI is revolutionizing exam preparation, enabling more effective and tailored assessments. Overall, AI's role in education is not to replace teachers but to augment and enhance teaching methodologies, ensuring fair and inclusive learning opportunities for all students.
5. Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Batteries
Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly growing in the auto industry, with global sales expected to rise. They went from 4% in 2020 to 13% in 2022, and potentially will be 30% by 2030. This growth is driven by government policies, increased production and model variety from automakers, and growing consumer interest.
Challenges
Some of the challenges of the EV industry are:
1. High Cost: EVs are generally more expensive upfront than traditional cars.
2. Battery Limitations: battery life, performance in extreme temperatures, and environmental impact of materials.
3. Charging Infrastructure: Limited charging stations.
4. Charging Time: Longer charging times compared to quick gas refueling.
5. Range Anxiety: Fear of running out of battery without nearby charging options.
6. Grid Demand: Increased EV usage requires major electrical grid upgrades.
7. Battery Disposal and Recycling: Efficient, eco-friendly disposal and recycling methods for EV batteries are still under development.
8. Model Variety: Limited options in vehicle categories and price ranges.

🤔 What Does that even Mean?
Semantic Analysis: Part of NLP that involves understanding the meanings and relationships of words and concepts in context.
Example: A customer service chatbot employs semantic analysis to interpret a query like "Why was my delivery delayed?" and responds with information about shipping delays, understanding the context without explicit keywords.
