Are Chips the New Oil?
The race to develop AI chips is heating up as tech giants aim to reduce their reliance on Nvidia, which currently dominates the market with over 80% share in AI-specific chips.
Meta Platforms: Meta unveiled its in-house AI chip, "Artemis," aiming to enhance its AI applications and decrease dependency on Nvidia. Despite its development, Meta continues to purchase significant quantities of Nvidia's H100 chips, planning to acquire equivalents of 600,000 units this year (~$18,000,000,000). These chips retail for ~$30k and can be found on eBay for about ~$42k.
Google: Google introduced the "Axion" chip to diversify its computing needs across services like YouTube and big data analytics, reducing its reliance on outside vendors. This move complements Google's existing Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and pushes it into competition with traditional chip manufacturers.
Nvidia's Dominance: Despite these advancements from Meta and Google, Nvidia maintains a strong market position, essential for various AI applications across industries.
Impact: The shift towards in-house chip development by major tech companies highlights a trend towards self-reliance and tailored technology solutions, potentially reshaping competitive dynamics in the tech industry.

Robotics Poised for Breakthrough with AI Integration
Robotics is nearing a transformative phase akin to the impact of ChatGPT in AI, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence that enhance robot functionality and adaptability in home environments. Stretch, a notable example developed by Charlie Kemp, is a robot equipped with AI capabilities, priced around $18,000, that helps users perform daily activities more independently. This robot symbolizes significant progress in making versatile home robots a reality, capable of assisting with tasks ranging from personal care to household chores.
Researchers are now applying AI techniques like reinforcement learning to enable robots to adapt to new environments and learn tasks dynamically. Such developments suggest that intelligent, functional robots could soon become an integral part of our daily living spaces, assisting with a variety of everyday tasks.
